DIAMOND HILL SMALL CAP CLASS A

Rating:

DATE: 9/7/2010

As I said in my other review, this fund requires patience. It should be considered by those looking to invest in small caps for the long-term.
Diamond Hill has one of the best reputations for treating fundholders right. Add that to this being one of the best small value funds you can buy and you've got a winner. ...

BERWYN INCOME FUND

Rating:

DATE: 9/2/2010

BERIX has remained in the top 25 of its conservative allocation category for the past 10 years. Held up well in the recent bear market, outperformed in 2009's rally and is holding strong in the choppy waters of 2010.
Low volatility
Well diversified
Strong income

This value-biased fund is the second best performer in the past decade. Combine that with low fees and expert management and you've got a real winner. 10-year trailing return is 8.58%; 5-year trailing retur ...

MANNING & NAPIER PRO-BLEND CNSRV TERM S

Rating:

DATE: 8/30/2010

This is it, IMHO.

The bond stake at EXDAX is currently around 70% as the very talented managers believe growth will be slow in the coming years.

More than 40 analysts are assigned to industries to review stocks. Whatever. The strategy is such that management almost always hits its mark.

Volatility is low and excellent long-term record.
10-year return is 5.8%.

T ROWE PRICE GLOBAL STOCK

Rating:

DATE: 8/26/2010

I changed my mind about getting in at the right time. I had no idea how shaky an aggressive growth strategy would be. I was expecting a slower and upward pace.

WHOLE FOODS MKT INC

Rating:

DATE: 8/19/2010

Still the largest retailer of organic and natural foods. Sales growth back in positive territory and not insignificant margin improvements.

Whole Foods comeback is stronger than many analysts expected and although I am a believer, there may be some bumps ahead as the economy struggles to recover. I noticed that in my local Whole Foods, more daily specials are being offered and coupons encouraged to keep the shoppers from drifting.

Although more traditional supermarket ...

CALAMOS CONVERTIBLE CLASS A

Rating:

DATE: 8/16/2010

Always liked this fund. A consistent balance of protecting in a down market and good exposure in rising markets. Calamos might be the most experienced manager for convertibles.

If you are looking for better returns, expect lower grade convertibles in a rival fund. I prefer to get good returns without too much risk. ...

WADDELL & REED ADV SCIENCE & TECH CL A

Rating:

DATE: 8/13/2010

The manager, Zack Shafran, will include in the portfolio 20-30% applied science and technology firms - firms that apply new technologies to improve their business. So, there is a much broader reach at this fund than at most other technology funds. It also lessens volatility, as the tech sector is highly volatile. There is a health-care stake that shielded UNSCX during the bear market. It may lag in a tech rally, but for my money, this fund is an investor's investment and not a gamble. Excelle ...

VANGUARD BOND INDEX TOTAL MARKET

Rating:

DATE: 8/6/2010

So much talk about bonds and bond funds these days
and a popular, very low cost fund is on my mind.
What to do? Yielding less than a measly 3%, investors in this fund may be looking to shift to shorter-term bonds. But, what they'll see is such depressed short-term rates, that the shift will have very little or no effect on their return. So what to do? Well, chasing performance never works and moving to a money market fund defeats your goals. Stay the course? For those who can st ...

FRANKLIN RISING DIVIDENDS CLASS A

Rating:

DATE: 8/2/2010

FRDPX has posted double-digit returns last year and that is better than its from inception average and better than the overall domestic market.

The fund is required to own stocks that have a 10-year history and this is important to note, as owners or potential investors may assume that the possible increase of companies paying dividends in response to lower taxes won't affect it.

What may strike us as a volatile fund is actually very consistent in its buy and hold str ...

POWERSHARES EMERGING MARKETS SOVEREIGN DEBT.

Rating:

DATE: 7/27/2010

An emerging market ETF that owns only United States dollar-denominated bonds, so there is no currency exposure and it improves the liquidity of the portfolio. Currency exposure can be risky but if the dollar turns it is not favorable. I have to emphasize that investing in emerging markets is risky and should only be a small percentage of most folks' portfolios, but this is a low cost way to get exposure. The funds average credit rating is below investment grade (the fund tracks emerging market ...

VANGUARD TOTAL BOND MARKET

Rating:

DATE: 7/25/2010

For diversified, fixed-income exposure this is the etf I chose. High credit-quality bonds, low cost to me, one-stop shop to get into the investment-grade bond market.
Another thing I was told is that is a separate share class of a large-bond mutual fund and it has lower tracking error than its competitors.

PIMCO TOTAL RETURN CLASS A

Rating:

16% of all taxable bond fund inflows, flowed into PTTAX in the past year.
Bear in mind, Gross (who is a whiz of a manager) can't manufacture good returns when the tide changes and change it will, according to Gross himself.
Still, if things get rocky best to have your money managed by the best in the business. ...

VANGUARD TAX MANAGED SMALL CAP INVESTOR

Rating:

DATE: 7/20/2010

This fund has been performing with just a bit better than middling results. Still, the 10 year
is about 5 1/2% trailing return.
I bought it because it is tax efficient and the managers keep it that way by selling some stocks at a loss to offset capital gains. Fees are also low. There are detterents to sell-offs which can cause a taxable event and they are 1) minimum, initial purchase is $10,000 and a 1% redemption fee if you sell it before owning it for 5years or longer. ...

BB&T SPECIAL OPP EQUITY FD CL A

Rating:

I've overlooked this large growth mutual fund.
Its 5-year, trailing performance is an excellent 5.12% placing it at the number 3 spot in its category. Almost 11% of the portfolio are Federal Treas. Obligs. and Akami Technolgies takes second place at almost 5%. Morningstar rates this fund 5 stars and I would too, if it didn't have a front-load. ...

SCHRODER US OPPORTUNITIES

Rating:

DATE: 7/12/2010

This is a solid, feet-on-the-ground fund managed by a skilled manager who managed to keep volatility low and returns high.

ISHARES TR RUSSELL 2000 INDEX FD

Rating:

DATE: 7/7/2010

The most liquid small-cap ETF maybe ideal for shorting, at this time, since the buzz is that large-caps are less expensive than small-caps right now. COLUMBIA VALUE AND RESTRUCTURING

Rating:

DATE: 6/28/2010

Columbia Value can be a roller coaster ride to say the least. One year it is at the bottom of its large value category in ranking; the next year, it soars to the top. This has been a regular pattern. But if you are thinking long-term, its 15 year trailing return is 10.18% putting in the number 1 spot.
Because of the fund's below average yield and the fact that it is often out of step with the market
means this will not be suitable for anyone does not like the ride. ...

EVERGREEN OMEGA CLASS A

DATE: 6/24/2010

well, new in the past three years and time for the new manager,Aziz Hamzaogullari to prove he has the stuff to run a fund with success. The fund's 3 year return through October, 2009 tops the S&P 500 Index by 8.3% and in the large-growth category of funds it ranks #1.
The overall strategy is to find companies with the potential to deliver strong returns on invested capital with above average growth for the long-term.

GENERAL ELECTRIC CO

Rating:

DATE: 6/21/2010

Worth of another review, GE is the leader in all of the markets in which it competes. The company has enormous amounts of cash to invest in business expansion and has very low barriers when entering into a new market. Also, it is no small thing that the economic stimulus package encourages activity in markets that GE supports.

Although GE is vulnerable to economic downturns, the strength of its management team has led to value to its shareholders. ...

PARNASSUS SMALL CAP

Rating:

DATE: 6/17/2010

This 5 year-old small cap fund has a 7% annualized gain since inception.
Management is responsible for the fund's good fate. Jerome Dodson seeks out companies with enduring competitive advantage and good, solid management. He looks for values.

Although a new fund, Panassus has exercised this strategy for 25 years with conviction and excellent results.
The fund uses environmental and social screens to find companies, that care for the environment, treate their employees ...

HARBOR HIGH YIELD BOND FUND INSTITUTIONAL CLASS

Rating:

DATE: 6/15/2010

Retail shares are pricey, but if you can get into the institutional shares it could be a worthy option to consider.

More defensive than its competition, and I don't mind a little more caution in a high-yield fund.
Holds more cash than its peers and has about 16% of below B bonds vs. the competitions' average of 20%.

31% gain last year is very nice, but it lags behind other high-yield funds. That is okay with me, like I said, safety counts. ...
