BLACKROCK GLOBAL ALLOCATION CL A

Rating:

DATE: 6/3/2010

Caution on the part of the fund's managers had investors feeling a bit uncomfortable with lagging performance, so far, this year as compared to other world-allocation funds.
Management is not afraid to go down its own road - the goal is to have this fund as a long-term anchor. Its stellar 3,5 and 10 year performance record is at the top of the heap. 10 year annualized performance is 7.95%.
My suggestion here is use this as a core holding. I don't see it's role in an already diversi ...

VANGUARD CONVERTIBLE SECURITIES

Rating:

DATE: 6/1/2010

New investors are now welcome.

VCVSX avoids convertible preferreds which carry interest-rate risk. The manager also concentrates of high-quality bonds.
Over the long-term, the fund's 4.5% has put it in the top of 25 of its category is owed to manager, Keele's ability to site undervalued bonds.

Good supporting player with a low pricetag. ...

SPDR BARCLAYS CAPITAL INTERNATIONAL CORPORATE BOND ETF

Rating:

DATE: 5/27/2010

The first international corporate bond fund ETF.
The ETF is 90% unhedged exposure to euro-dominated debt.

Investment grade only,an average yield of 3% and a .55% annual ER(seems a bit high to me).

This is of interest to those seeking out country and interest-rate diversification.
Top country weightings are Germany (18%), United States (17% - this group is U.S. corporate bonds not denominated in the United States), France (12%), France (12%), United Kingdom ...

METROPOLITAN WEST HIGH YIELD BOND CL M

Rating:

DATE: 5/25/2010

With the popularity of high-yield bonds, MWHYX has had much of the spotlight.
Since it is unlikely to sustain the success its
huber-performance of 2009, management has pulled back on some of the risk by reducing the amount of low-quality bonds in the portfolio. 5 year total return ranks it number 4 in its category with return of 7.89%. ER is now capped at .80 ...

SEQUOIA FD

Rating:

DATE: 5/17/2010

I recently read somewhere that this excellent;albeit, always closed fund can be bought into as a first-time investor in the fund. Schwab, Vanguard and some others will sell it to you for a transaction fee. The fee will mean nothing when holding this fund for the long-term and the fund's fees are low. IOW, the transaction fee would not deter me from buying this fund. It can be a bumpy ride, but over the long-term, the performance is outstanding. 15-year, total trailing return is 10.53% about as ...

JENNISON 20/20 FOCUS CL A

Rating:

DATE: 5/12/2010

Two managers. One an expert growth investing and the other an expert in value investing. Each picks 20 stocks; hence, 20/20. The idea is that the value/growth strategy will help the fund perform well in a variety of market conditions.
Historically, this strategy has worked and the fund has a very good long-term record, but because there are only 40 stocks in the portfolio, each stock has a significant impact on the fund. YTD,doing very badly as compared to other domestic stock funds and ...

LOOMIS SAYLES BOND RETAIL

Rating:

DATE: 5/10/2010

The fund managers are currently taking credit-risk instead of interest-rate risk as they believe the bond market is on an upward trend.
Some believe that these are the best managers in the business and the sterling long-term record is the proof. This is a bold and,in my perception, fearless fund, but the gods are certainly with these guys with a ten year, trailing total return of 9.11%. Be advised, down-markets can bring LSBRX down to earth, but the long-term strategy is the key. ...

BURGER KING HLDGS INC COM

Rating:

DATE: 5/7/2010

Burger King is looking good to buy at the 18 to 19 dollar level.

BK has not been doing too well and it is aiming at turning that around by improving average restaurant sales. Not an easy thing considering the competition. The opportunity I see is expanding in established markets, overseas and I suspect the company is eyeing that prize. Even with challenges, BK produces stable cash flow because of long-term franchisee loyalty and rent. So, I may pick up some BK, myself today (stock ...

REVENUESHARES ADR FUND

Rating:

DATE: 5/6/2010

I was just introduced to this and other RevenueShares ETFs and I am very impressed with the logic of weighting by revenue and not market cap. There is alpha in this approach and it will benefit my portfolio. I like the ADR because of the overweighting of China. The MSCI EAFE is not representaive of world GNP output. This is a better way to play the international markets. WG 88 ...

ARIEL FUND

Rating:

DATE: 5/6/2010

This bold fund requires patience. Those with a very long-term horizon may consider it as a core fund. Sort of a set it and forget fund. The 10 and 15 year returns beat the market and almost all of the other funds like it in the mid-cap blend category. Smaller caps and
a concentrated portfolio will assure the fundholder of a bumpy ride at times. ...

Wanted to bring to everyone's attention because if you want just one fund to do all the work this is an idea worth considering.
My nephew owns it and since he is not very savvy, investment-wise and does not really want to be bothered with investments, his friend, an accountant and estate planner, recommended this fund. Expenses are very cheap and it is diversified. Performance is not the best, but respectable. ...

DELAFIELD FUND INC

Rating:

DATE: 4/26/2010

Delafield is a sleeper, but among fund afficionados
the buzz is all about how DEFIX managed to outperform almost all of its rivals and the Russell
Mid Val Index.
And, it is not because the fund plays it safe, just the opposite as the fund carries more debt than its rivals, also. The managers at Delafield have built their careers around accurately identifying companies where change is happening in a positive way.

This mid-cap value fund ranks #1 in annualized perfo ...

APPLESEED FUND

Rating:

DATE: 4/19/2010

Mandates or no, Appleseed has gained almost 9 1/2% since its beginnings in 2006.

Simply the very expert managers at this fund screens for socially responsible companies and looks only at companies with strong balance sheets and good returns
and whose stock is trading at a deep discount.
Four out of five of the team must approve the stock before it is purchased. Stock picking can make for a somewhat volatile fund, so I would have to expect a few bumps along the way. How ...

Value conscious and that is a good thing. The fund's cash stake at the moment is about 10%, which if fine and the highest it has been since 2005. The managers take care in how they will invest.
