DGEIX - Take Notice of DFA Funds
Rating:

DATE: 2/3/2010
The fund holds stock from all over the world. The manager maintains a strict quantitative approach based on sound academic research.
The stand-out feature of DGEIX is its backing. DFA boasts a number of renowned academics who back up a staff of experienced and highly-qualified portfolio managers and quant analysts.
Downside is availablity of the fund. Available through select advisors as DFA encourages building your portfolio around DFA funds.
Strong focus on small-caps.

QUAKER STRATEGIC GROWTH CLASS A
Rating:

DATE: 2/2/2010
I am contemplating selling this fund. It is much too volatile and the expenses are higher than any other fund I've researched in the growth category.
Long-term results have been very good, but my personal goals are changing. ...

DODGX - Wait and See
Rating:

DATE: 2/2/2010
The fund had my head spinning in 2008- like it could do no right.
Although it has a long way to recover it is moving in the right direction, more so than others funds of its kind.
No use selling it when it is on its way up again! ...

VGHCX - Staying their Course
Rating:

DATE: 2/1/2010
The largest of all health-care funds available. At around 20 billion it does not move around easily; pretty much stays its course.
Buy and hold approach the fund maintains exposure to five areas of the health-care industry.
International stocks, pharmaceuticals, services, devices and biotechnology.
The plodding along, business as usual has paid off for investors. The five and ten year performance record have place the fund in the top quartile of its category. ...

BJBIX - Own Style Still Works
Rating:

DATE: 1/29/2010
This excellent fund lost a great deal of footing during a three-month stretch after the market bottom in March, 2009. Dearth of banks and emerging markets outside of the European Union, as far as I can see, would be the reason.
The style stays the same and managers are as skilled as managers can get. This is a fund that is a strong long-term hold and has proven its worth over the years. ...

VANGUARD SHORT TERM BOND INDEX
Rating:

DATE: 1/29/2010
Rock-bottom expenses and a management team with a great deal of experience. The fund has the record of beating its benchmark for the past 5 years. Sticks to higher-credit quality than most of its peers.
Great fixed income core fund. Also a good fund to support a more adventurous bond portfolio.
Fund does not invest in mortgage-backed bonds.
5- year trailing performance: 4.67%
10 year trailing performance: 5.22%

VTSMX - Has just about everthing domestic
Rating:

DATE: 1/28/2010
As performance it sits right in the middle of its large-blend category for the short and long-term.
A one-stop shop for a domestic equity fund with low expenses. Stocks include every size from all industries and sectors. Good fund for a taxable account. ...

GOOG - It's been great!
Rating:

DATE: 1/27/2010
I am slowly letting my Google stock go.
It has been a great adventure, but I strongly doubt the firm will replicate its past success.
Although, still a very cash rich business, growth is bound to be slow, going forward, IMO. ...

ANWPX - Good Global Growth
AMERICAN NEW PERSPECTIVE CLASS A
Rating:

DATE: 1/27/2010
This fund has proved that it can limit its losses during bear markets and has a record of participating in uptrends. Low expense ratio also adds to its impressive, long-term performance record, remaining in the top 25%.

MFLDX - Talent behind the Strategy
Rating:

DATE: 1/25/2010
Makes macroeconomic bets mostly through equites.
Times its net exposure (long vs short). This model can scream volatility and this fund is not an exception. I did well, though, during the 2008 debacle and Michael Aronstein, manager of the fund is as good as you can get along with very specialized resources to back him up. Even though the fund can be riskier than others in the long-short category because of high equity exposure, it ranks in the top ten since inception.

SVU - Not a Winning Bet
Rating:

DATE: 1/18/2010
Supermarkets have been suffering not so silently, from the downturn in the economy. More leveraged than its peers, SUPERVALU has been particularly hard-hit. Not in a good position to deal with a consumer-led recession, I believe the pain is not going to subside any time soon. By acquiring Albertson's the company made its bet on conventional supermarkets.
However, the integration has gone smoothly and will/should result in a more efficient competitor.
Still, not on my list of buys any ...

SENCX - Deserves the Spotlight
Rating:

DATE: 1/18/2010
I never see much in print about SENCX and I want to report that this has been a very good fund for me. The short and long-term results are very good, especially comparing it to other common stock funds. Five year performance, annualized, is 3.25% and I found that that is almost 2 points better than the category average. Morningstar rates the fund four stars, but I give it five. ...

DODFX - My best fund
DODGE & COX INTERNATL STOCK FUND
Rating:

DATE: 1/13/2010
This is one of the best funds I own. Performance has been great for short and long term.
I read that up to November, 2009, for the year it was up 44%, better than practically any other fund in its category. Dodge & Cox keep their fees low, too. ...

PRHSX - I'd Buy More!
Rating:

DATE: 1/11/2010
The manager, Kris Jenner, continues a balance of small names with the big, safer companies. This is most definitely a long-term hold and has an excellent reputation for investing in health care.
TRowe, too has a great reputation and I am pleased with the performance of this fund. Over 8%
annual return for 5 and 10 years. In addition, the expenses are quite low for a niche fund. ...

MWTRX - Excellent bond fund; No merger fears
METROPOLITAN WEST TOTAL RETURN BOND
Rating:

DATE: 1/8/2010
MetWest has been acquired by the asset-management firm,TCW. No plans, though to merge existing funds. So there should be no worry that this great fund would suffer as a result. The fund has a stable, highly-experienced team of managers
and has a value-oriented approach. The proof to great management, IMO, is that a fund can perform well under all market conditions and this fund has. One of the best, if not the best intermediate-term bond funds around, but not as well known as the others. ...

YACKX - Diversify your Index Fund
Rating:

DATE: 1/6/2010
This fund is a good complement for a portfolio of index funds. The managers do not use a benchmark.
And , as others have already said, strong perfomer in the 2000-2002 bear market and only lost 26% in 2008. For those with all their eggs in the index fund basket, you may want to consider a bit of diversification and this fund is perfect for just that. Ranks number 1 for the 1, 3, 5 and 10 year in the Large Value category. ...

ARFFX - Superb Fund
Rating:

DATE: 1/4/2010
Among a small percentage that loss less than most in 2008 and is enjoying a rally in 2009.
This fund is turning out to be a real gem. The fund's focus is quality firms and the manager picked up some great companies, on the cheap. Ariel is a fund company that should be taken seriously. Not only expert skills, but these guys invest a great deal of their own money in their funds. That says a lot! YTD, almost 10 points better than the average large-value fund, ranking the fund in the top 10 w ...

LMVTX - No More Miller Time
Rating:

DATE: 1/2/2010
Four years ago, this fund beat the S&P 500 for 15 years in a row. Then 2008 happened and it is Miller who?
Well, he's back ahead of the index again, this year with a 41% return through December 22, 2009.
It is a streak and we know it. Also, this time around there are many funds currently on a streak.
Even though it now ranks in the top 10 of Large Blend mutual funds, the blush is off the rose for me.

VTSMX - Well-Rounded
Rating:

DATE: 12/28/2009
In November, VTSMX, captured 1 billion dollars in flows. For the year, through November at total of 10.2 billion.
I would call this fund a good all around domestic mutual fund from the original creators of the index fund, Vanguard. You get broad market exposure, pay very little in expenses and can be placed in a taxable account because of very little tax bite. Also, you get exposure to small and micro caps unlike a fund that tracks the S&P 500. ...
