9/22/2009 | TIPS for Inflation HedgeREVIEWER: bearhugger Nothing fancy here,but an easy and low-cost way to access Treasury Inflation-Protected Securitiesa/k/a TIPS. The average duration is in a range of 3-3 1/2 years with flexibility. Very nice complement in a core portfolio to ETF's that track the Barclay's Aggregate Bond Index as this index excludes TIPS. TIPS are an effective way to hedge inflation. Note that because TIPS have inflation adjustment, yields will fluctuate. I feel it is must better to own TIPS in a fund like this rather than individual bond. Individual bond holders will face a tax bill on the inflation adjustment, which is a noncash event.
